EU Cookie Law 10 months 2 weeks ago #53110

Just bought a useless plugin which doesn't have a decline function. It is a module, which means it can have multiple language support. However, this module does not bother in which module you put it in. It's always a dropdown from the top. I guess it is written with a body class?( The makers of this plugin comes from pulseextensions, these guys, at least thats my feeling, mass post with multiple accounts on Jextension site to manipulate the results positively dispite of it's quality).

So, it's not an option because a user cannot use decline and the cookie will be used anyway if you don't agree. Is that legal? Can't really understand this law since I'm not that kind of an expert reader.

Then....I see many of these extensions have a "L" (language)

does that mean that the plugin, you mention tessa, have the option to dedicate a language with it's own input for each language? Or how do I use it on a multi language site?

Do you mean that it doesn't matter what module position you put it in, it's always up top?

Are you sure it's saving cookies to the browser? If so, what are the cookies used for?

Also what does the cookie have to do with the module positions?

The L icon on the JED means that the extension provides at least one translation.

Looking forward to your reply.

Nick

yeah it is a module, however, you can choose any module position. It does not matter, it is placed the same way as the microsoft active-x warning anyway. Not that thats a problem, i like that top position, but why build a module. The good thing about it was because of multi language sinceyou can choose a language for each module.

I have no idea if it blocks the cookies or not. I not to technician yet to know if the cookie is blocked or anything.
The L icon on the JED means that the extension provides at least one translation.
How does this translation work then? Since it's a plugin. I want to buy another extension for this matter but don't know if I can put several translations into the plugin. for instance. If an UK/US visitor views the site he/she gets the UK/US version txt. If a dutch person .... he gets NL version of the text.

Is this a module so you can ask people in europe to accept cookies? Like the on one Akeebabackups.com?

If it is ask them which one they use.

Hi,

No sure if that will help - this website offer quite good solutions www.civicuk.com/cookie-law and it gives an option to choose consent model. Many UK site like the Scottish Gov using this plugin. Also heard about Kookie Grab which will prevent cookies to be set on visitor browser before they agree.
To me it looks like Akeeba uses Cookie Monster extension but may be wrong :)

Anna
Enjoy you day :)

Hi accessvirus,

You can find a full list of available plugins on the JED Cookie Control category:
extensions.joomla.org/extensions/site-management/cookie-control

Hope this helps!

I nick,

yeah. I know, but the problem with that is, that most of those extensions do not what you whould think they should do. For instance the version of pulseextensions. Many rates. Literally not able to block the cookies.

Hi accessvirus,

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you'd like from us in regards to support. Would you clarify, please?

Also, earlier I asked you the following questions:
Are you sure it's saving cookies to the browser? If so, what are the cookies used for?

Also what does the cookie have to do with the module positions?

To which you responded:accessvirus wrote:

But now, you're stating the following:accessvirus wrote:

which appears to be in contradiction to what you stated earlier. If you've gathered new insight, could you answer my original questions above so that I can be of more help?

Thanks in advance for any clarification!

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi nick,
my topic started with some questions about this law and a question if tessa's plugin should be choosen and if it also has the option to have multilanguage support and how the plugin whould handle languages since this can be only done with a module or a plugin code inside a language specific article. But since this is a popup plugin only, at least what I need, it does not have an article function of use I guess.

again.

sorry for my wrong written lines due to the fact this was indeed a contradiction of my own mind :) I didn't understand where to start and changed minds durring investigation.

I found out that at least one extension did not do what I want. Have the option to decline but just surf that site anyway. Well, maybe that function was there, but I just wanted a visible button so people could decline.

For instance. Block all cookies untill the you agree or permantly disagree. I don't know what extension does block all and how to check if it will block. So I started this topic in the hope someone could explain me where I can check this and what a cookie is and does. (what a cookie is and does, I know now). But what I don't know is where is it stored and how to know what extension or joomla itself, is under the terms of this law. I mean, how do I know as a developer what other peoples code do (I know I should know this for my customers, but this law is just to vague to most developers I guess), where the extension saves the cookie so I can test if it acctually does block and not trust blind on an extension developer, what I just did last week and not giving me what I need. At least, I guess.

No problem!

Thanks for the detailed clarification! OK, in that case, give Firebug for Firefox a try:
addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/firebug/

In it, you'll see a tab for Cookies that you can use to check which cookies are being added/blocked.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions.

Kind regards,
Nick

A thanks, I will get in touch with that tab, I already had firebug, but didn't know what I needed to think of cookies.

I'm gonna try and find out which cookies are passed and why.
