Hi,

I want an rss feed for my blog on my site, but I want to use K2 for the blog, which I have done. My problem is that K2's rss feed doesn't work (at least not well) with in the Chrome browser. [It works fine with firefox and internet explorer.] Also, I note in session 10 of the SEO course that there are additional benefits described with using Ninja RSS and feedburner that I don't know if K2's rss offers. I have found K2's discussion forums to be unhelpful and unresponsive trying to get answers to my problem regarding Chrome and it appears that others on their forum are similarly frustrated over various rss issues.

So my questions are: (1) Does anyone have experience getting the k2 rss feed to work with Chrome? (2) Does Ninja RSS work with K2 and how? (3) What is your advice given what I have shared?

It may be of interest to OST folks to hear a bit of my experience leading me to ask this question in advance of trying the Ninja RSS option. I had gone through the Menu Item menu and specified a page title in the Parameters (system) box the way I wanted it. Then I read the SEO tutorial recommending Joomla 1.5 extensions (I have a Joomla 1.5 site) and so downloaded Ace SEF and tried it out. It changed the page titles I set through the Parameters (system) and I could not find a place to specify the meta title I wanted. I ended up uninstalling it because I could not tell if what they referred to as title was (1) a meta title, and (2) if it was any different from the page title specified through the Parameters (system) box. What I can tell you is that, although the Session 6 SEO tutorial says metatitles are the "area of metadata ... missing from Joomla", nonetheless when I specify the title in the Parameters (system) box, that title shows up in the window tab of my Chrome browser and is different from the url menu designation. As an example, my About Us page url is: familytreemediation.net/about-us but the tab title is: "About Us - Family Tree Mediation - Divorce Mediation - Palo Alto - Los Altos". If you could clarify for me, does this tab title = my metatitle? The graphic in session 4 showing the window title seems to indicate this. If not, could you help clear up my confusion by explaining to a dummy what's what? :) And if it is the same as the metatitle, well, that's why I'm asking the original question above, because I'd like to avoid installing something that undoes some stuff that works and then having to uninstall, etc.

So back to the Ninja RSS, any recommendations about whether I can make it work with K22 and whether the effort is worth the risk, etc., that would be great!

Thanks so much,

Hank

Hello Hank,

1. Could you provide a link to the page with your k2 feed that is having issues with Chrome or a screenshot? What chrome version are you using? Did you test on other computers as well?

2. Earlier this year they have pushed Ninja RSS development to work with K2. Here is source: ninjaforge.com/forum/topic/12036-ninja-r...dicator-and-k2/29359

3. I haven't used this extension but willing to see what the issue is.

As for your meta title, this is where your title of your page is in:
<head>

 <base href="http://familytreemediation.net/about-us" />
 <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
 <meta name="robots" content="index, follow" />
 <meta name="keywords" content="divorce mediation, estate mediation, estate planning, elder mediation, parenting, young adults, independence, couples mediation, communication, alternative dispute resolution, conflict coaching" />
 <meta name="title" content="About Me" />
 <meta name="image" content="http://familytreemediation.net" />
 <meta name="description" content="Parenting - Divorce - Elder Care - Estate Issues: Family Tree Mediation helps families navigate conflict & make agreements constructively at low cost. Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Los Altos & Mountain View" />
 <meta name="generator" content="Joomla! 1.5 - Open Source Content Management" />
 <title>About Us - Family Tree Mediation - Divorce Mediation - Palo Alto - Los Altos</title>
Warm Regards,

Tessa Mero

Hi Tessa,

That's very helpful! Thank you. I see that the SEO course has been updated since I printed it out for ease of reading and that one of the changes is to remove "Session 6: Metadata and Joomla, where it said, if I understood correctly, that meta titles could not be controlled through Joomla's backend. It might be helpful to replace that section, which now seems to be missing by noting that we do have control over the metatitle and can access it through the menu item menu in the Parameters (System) input box where it allows you to input the title.

As for the Ninja RSS question, here is the link to my blog: familytreemediation.net/blog

And here is the link to my feed: familytreemediation.net/blog?format=feed

I will read the link you have provided and am sure it will help me decide what to do. Any further input, Tessa, Ed or anyone else would be welcome!

Oh, also, it says that my Google Chrome version is up to date (18.0.1025.168). I am attaching a screenshot of what I see in firefox where it works correctly, and importantly allows people to subscribe to the feed, and a screenshot of what I see in Chrome where it does NOT work well and does not allow people to subscribe. Last, I have tried it on another computer and get the same result.

Thanks so much,

Hank

Hi Hank,

If I understand the issue you're having correctly, that's just the way Google Chrome is. It doesn't come with built-in RSS support like Firefox does. You can double check on the following example RSS Feeds:
www.feedforall.com/blog-feed.xml

Kind regards,
Nick

WOW, Thank you, Nick! I could have spent a lot of time trying to chase that one down. Do you have any understanding of why Chrome would not support RSS feeds? Does this mean that people using Chrome can't subscribe to RSS Feeds unless they open up another browser?

Thank you!

Hank

Hi Hank,

You're welcome! :)

It's a relatively new browser so I'm sure that the reason is that they are busy implementing other features and are not too concerned about RSS Feeds at this point.

Users can subscribe. They just have to manually copy the link and paste it into their RSS Feed Reader. Then they'll be subscribed and won't have to re-do that step.

Kind regards,
Nick
