correct menu link type for an "internal" URL link? 10 months 2 weeks ago #50780

Hi I need to create a menu link type that will link to another page on my site. So I have copied the url. Available menu types don't include a clearly defined "internal" link.... only an "external URL". Is this the correct choice for a link to another page on my site, or is there a better menu type to use that I am not seeing?

Regards
Scott

Hi
I assume that you are linking from one article to another. This tutorial should help.

thanks mark, I will check it out. Not necessarily from one article to another - could be an ecommerce [hikashop] page, or a real estate [JEA] page, etc.

Hi Scott,

Look for 'Menu Item Alias' in the menu types.

In the parameters you'll find a drop down where you can choose the internal menu item you'd like to link to.

Hope this helps!

Yes, a menu item alias should do the trick :)

correct menu link type for an "internal" URL link? 10 months 2 weeks ago #50911

Hi Mark,

I checked out article: www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/how-to-li...r-using-hidden-menu/

and there is some good stuff in there! I used it to help me create a link in an article.

However, it is not exactly what I was looking for as I need to link from a real estate property page which is not directly accessible by clicking a menu link. Rather You must first click on a property listings menu link and then select the property on that listings page to open the individual property page. I have a property category with only one property in it so it is redundant to have to click one link to open a listing summary and then click a second time to open the property page. The only way I can see the url for the property page is if I publish the listings page on my menu. Then I can past the url as an "external url" menu link. But in this case I am now stuck with also having the menu link for the listing that I do not want anyone to see. The first attached pic shows the menu link that opens the listings page [only one property]. The second pic shows the property page that can only be arrived at by the link on the listings page... there is no menu link for this - I am trying to create this direct menu link without having to show the listings link or page.

Maybe there is some way using the hidden menu here but i am not sure....
I don't think an external url or a menu-item-alias will work if the source is not published. May it will if it is hidden but published...

Any help appreciated

Scott

Hi Scott,

Why not publish the source in the hidden menu?

Nick

correct menu link type for an "internal" URL link? 10 months 2 weeks ago #50953

Hi Nick

This is what I don't understand how to do. I created a menu called "hidden menu" as in tutorial. In the menu manager I can see that I have not linked any module to this menu and thus it is not visible anywhere on my site. I have published a JEA [real estate] property listings page link in this menu and I can now see the alias for this listings page. However, this is the page that I do NOT want to show. To get the alias or url I need I must view the listings page in browser, and then click on the property link on that listings page and then finally I can view with browser the subsequent product page and its url that I need to create the external url menu link... but if I can see it with browser, it is no longer hidden!

Sounds convoluted, right? Unfortunatley this JEA component does not give the option of creating a menu link directly to an individual property page, only a property listing page.

Any other ideas on this?

Thanks
Scott

Hi Scott,

Include the source within the hidden menu and then get your target URL and include it as an External Link wherever you want that menu item to appear.

That's what you're after, right?

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding, though.

Kind regards,
Nick

correct menu link type for an "internal" URL link? 10 months 2 weeks ago #50979

Hi Nick
I have the property listings page in the hidden menu which I can not see, so I have no way to click the individual property link [on that invisible page] to then see the individual property page and get the url. These individual property listings can not be linked to a menu which is my problem. This is a very similar set up as an ecommerce component with product listings except for the ecommerce components also give you the option to create a menu link to an individual product page . This JEA program does not have the equivalent to create a menu link to an individual property page.

I also tried to make the above listings page "special" access instead of "public" in that case I could see the pages to get the url, but then my product page inherited the "special" access and needed a password to view it.

I will email you link so you can see. Click on property "crocefisso dei molini" right now you have to click the menu link to the listings page [listing of only one property] and then click on the property again to finally see the property page. At this point I am ready to throw in the towel on this one.

Thanks again
Scott

Ah, I understand your dilemma now :) Don't worry, there's a simple trick :) Go to your hidden menu item, then copy its "Alias" or "Link", then go to the front-end of your site and paste it behind your domain name. That's the URL for the menu item :)

Another trick is to use Better Preview:

Hope this helps!
