Hello again,

I have client with a website that is going to be shutting down soon. Joomla 1.5.26

Her current clients will still need access to the site, but they aren't registered users. Is there a way to password protect the entire site, without having to create a list of registered users and changing the access to the content?

I tried to password protect the entire directory (the site is running as an add-on domain in a sub-directory of the public_html), but anyone who has a link (from an earlier newsletter etc.) can directly access the inner pages of the site.

I started looking on the JED, but you know how that can turn out. I'm looking for some ideas for something that will just work, preferably something someone has already used for a similar purpose.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Will

Hi will,

If you just take the site off-line, won't there be a single password for entry? Nobody should be able to reach interior pages if the site is offline.

Or could you put a password on the main directory using cpanel? That should also keep people from seeing anything in subdirectories. Although you have to have cpanel Not all servers let you do it.

Hi Ed,

Wow, I'm not usually this thick, even on a Monday...

I tried to p/w protect in c-panel, but direct links to interior pages still worked. Evidently the effect does not cascade down the directory structure.

I never even thought of taking the site off-line...doh...

A quick test shows that method working just fine.

Thanks again,
Will

If you lived here, I'd meet you at Starbucks and buy you a coffee. That wakes me up.

Cheers,
Ed

I'm drinking coffee now, and imagining you buying it. That's good enough. Just glad we could be here for you.

Cheers,

Thanks Ed :)

I took the site off-line, and now I can't log in from the front end.

From the back end, I can see the user is logged in (in the user manager), but the user can't access the site.

I've cleared the cache (browser and Joomla), but that didn't work.

The site was running CB, but I thought this might have something to do with it, so I uninstalled it, to no avail.

Any ideas why this might be happening?

Joomla 1.5.26 on Rochen hosting, everything is up to date.

Thanks,
Will

Hi Will,

What access level does your account have that you are trying to log in with?

Hi Tessa,

It did it for registered users and also with my SA acct.

Bizarre...

/*Edit*/
I set up a regular login page, and that worked, so i think it had something to do with it being the 'Offline' login. If it only did it for registered users, I'd think that it was a permissions issue, but the odd thing was that it was doing it for the SA acct. as well.

My quick solution was to make the login page the default and change the access levels for all of the menus. I'll probably change all of the articles too, but for that I'll most likely write a query for com_content and change the access from 0 to 1.

I just thought I'd ask in case this was a known issue.

Thanks,
Will

Sounds like the right way to go about it. I haven't seen anything on this in the forums so far. I'll watch for it as I research and post anything if I come across it.
