TOPIC: Building a community within my Joomla 2.5 website

Building a community within my Joomla 2.5 website 1 year 1 month ago #43908

Hello,

I have recently migrated my website using the Joomla JA Teline IV template from J1.5 to J2.5 (currently on a test evironment on my host server).

Is there an extension for J2.5 that would allow my website to facilitate an online community that enables:

1). The administrator of the site to create events and publish it in the community section of the website.
2). The administrator of the site to publish members's poetry and prose.
3). The administrator of the site to publish member's reviews.
4). Members to send photos (to an email address and the ability for it to be reviewed before it's spublished).
5). Certain members to be nominated to have the ability to write blogs for the website.
6). A connection from the website to Facebook and Twitter.

I look forward to a response regarding this matter.

With thanks and kind regards,

Joyce.

Hi Joyce,

Tessa is right. Jomsocial would be your best bet. It's very flexible and powerful, so you could bend it to accomplish what you're looking for. The other reasonable alternative is Community Builder:

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your response. I'm looking for something that will give me the basic functionality outlined above for the members of my online magazine.
So I am not looking for something with lots of functionality that
I will not need. By that I mean that I am not looking to replicate Facebook
on my site.

Therefore I need some advise on whether to go for JomSocial or
Community Builder. Could you tell me which one you would recommend from:
functionality, ease of use and ease of installation.

Many thanks,
Joyce

Hi Joyce,

You're welcome!

Would it be OK if the poetry and prose were just set up in articles?

For #4, could you explain that more please?

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,

Yes, it would be OK for poetry & prose to
be set up as articles.

I suppose what I mean with regards to #4 is:

• Members can upload their own photos onto
their own area.
• Photos uploaded by Members to be picked up by
the administrator who can review them & publish
selected ones into a photo gallery.

I hope this clarifies #4.

Many thanks,

Joyce

Hi Joyce,

OK, another question in order to get to an answer.

You mentioned:
Members can upload their own photos onto
their own area.
Could you explain what else will be in the member area?

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,

The members are should have:
Photos, videos, members articles, events,

A nice to have would be member blogs, newsletter (article)
& the ability to set up Member competition, e.g. Photo & Writer competition (articles?).

Many thanks,

Joyce

Hi Joyce,

OK, in that case, we're back to Jomsocial and Community Builder :) As soon as you start stacking all those features, you've basically narrowed yourself down to Jomsocial and Community Builder.

Community Builder is free (although they have commercial addons):
extensions.joomla.org/extensions/clients...ties/communities/210

While Jomsocial has a $1 trial plan:
www.jomsocial.com/buy-now.html#trialplan

Could you give them a try and see if either one is a good fit for you?

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,

Thanks for getting back to me.

OK, I understand that both products fit my requirements
from a functionality point of view.

Based on personal experience, do you have a preference
with regards to ease of use and ease of implementation?

Many thanks.

Hi Joyce,

You're welcome!

Jomsocial in my opinion is easier to use and implement. It also has more features right out of the box.

Hi Joyce,

JomSocial is very simple to implement and use (according to my experience). Just install the extension and get it set up. The great thing is JomSocial just recently released a new stable version! :-)

If you get stuck we will be happy to help. :-)

I'm working on the jomsocial tutorial. What specifically would you like to see covered. Can you narrow it down to your most important topic? Let me know as soon as you can.

Hi Joyce and Kiki,

Sorry for the slight delay! We actually created a whole mini-class for you, so hopefully it was worth the wait :)

Could you give the new Jomsocial mini-class a try please?

Your permissions may not be set correctly or the path to your tmp folder is not correct in the global confguration.

Use Akeeba Admin Tools to set all your permissions properly.
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/admin-too...nd-file-permissions/

Check out this tutorial to check out your tmp folder.
www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/jfoldercreate/

Let us know if that solves your problem. If not we'll need to look elsewhere.

Cheers,
Ed

Building a community within my Joomla 2.5 website 1 year 3 weeks ago #44769

Hello Ed,

I took the steps you suggest but still have the same error.

1). The permissions are 0755 for the folders and 0644 for files.
2). The /tmp/folder folder exists and has permissions of 0755. It's ownership/group is the same as the other folders.
3). The path for the /tmp/folder is correct in the global config.

This is all for my ghanaoracle test environment. I sent you the details for my FTP access, hosting access and Joomla backend access on 12/4/12. I will resend them again and would be grateful if you could look into this to see if everything is set up correctly.

Any other suggestions would be gratefully received.

With thanks and kind regards,

Joyce

Hi Joyce,

If you honestly feel this may not be a permission issue, the only other reason I can think of where your extension manager will not allow you to install extensions is if you run out of space on your server.

Can you check the size of the extension and the amount of space you have on your server?

Just curious. Thanks. :-)

Tessa Mero
