Breeze Template Menu Issue 1 year 3 months ago #38564

Greetings,
I am tweaking www.bctravelgems.com. Look at the top menu, with BC People, BC Spas, etc.

I recently updated this site from Joomla 1.7 to the latest 2.5 version. Until today, there was no menu in the user3 (top, horizontal navigation) position. I created that menu today.

This new menu, called TOP MENU, has thus far ONE menu item in it: HOME. For some weird reason, a slew of other menu items are showing up, instead of HOME.

In case the template was the issue, I downloaded the Breeze template again from OSTraining, installed it, assigned it as the default and uploaded all my custom images and CSS files. The problem persists.

I rebuilt ALL menus, for the heck of it. I also repaired the database and cleared my cache.

See screenshots for the menu and the menu module.

Thanks again for your support.
-Hope

ps: the screenshot was cropped so I replaced it with a new one

For those other menu items, have you checked your menu manager and see what "menu name" they are assigned to? And then check what module it's being assigned to also?

I have a feeling that this menu is overriding the module position, so when you try to make a new one, nothing will show up.

Hi Tessa,

Thanks for getting back to me on a Sunday night!

The menu items that are appearing, for some weird reason, in the Top Menu exist officially only in the Main Menu, which is why this is so bizarre.

The Main Menu items, as part of Main Menu, are attached to the Main Menu module which is assigned to the LEFT position.

The Top Menu item HOME is the only menu item in that menu, which is assigned to the Top Menu module which is assigned to the user3 position.

I hope I'm addressing your concerns.

Thanks again for helping.

I think this is hard to determine without looking in your back end. Well at least for me.

Have you identified where 'BCs Spa and Retreats' is as far as what menu group it is located in? It can't just be hiding on you. I know I struggled with looking for where menu's were coming from when I loaded a template with preinstalled articles and menus, which is a pain sometimes playing the search and find game.

OSTraining will help you resolve it though. Hang tight. :-)

Can you please do me a favor and take a screenshot of your menu manager list? Not one specific menu's but all of them on one page and where they are assigned to?

I just want to get a better idea how you have it set up. It might also help identify the problem.

Hi Hope,

Before having OSTraining staff logging into your site, let's do a few more troubleshooting techniques.

Could you do me a favor and go into your module manager, and take a screenshot of each page? I'm thinking that menu might be an actual module rather than a menu taking over that section. But I don't know, which is why I'm asking this! :-D

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tessa,
Attached is a PDF of the entire list of modules, from the module manager. Is that what you wanted?

Sorry to bump the thread, but I'm wondering if I should remove that problematic menu from the public eye. My client is living with a very funky site while I wait for a solution.

Hi Hope. I'm looking at that image and it seems you have a module named "Article Categories" that overrides your user3 position.

Try disabling that or removing it and see if your new menu appears.

That would be the first thing I'd try. ;-)

Tessa, that was it! Thank you so much. I never had this problem before and I'm so glad to understand it better.

Nick, I received the email notification of your note before I saw and tried Tessa's fix, so you can ignore the credentials I sent you. Thanks for being willing to go under the hood!

Thank you Tessa!!

Actually, this is interesting. It looks like you could, in theory, intentionally assign an articles category module to a menu position and end up with a menu? That's what happened unintentionally.

Hi Hope.

I'm very excited that your website is working the way you want it to now. I understand how important that could be.

Your user3 position is of the "menu" type. So when you put a module in that position it will do it's best to mimic a menu set. Since it's categories being input there, your parent categories are listed there, and your sub categories are listed in your sub menu's. Strange, I know.
