I am working through the Joomla Explained book and am on Page 75, figure 4.26.

When I view my Transport Category articles in Article Manager the order shown is Airport (2), Bus Station (3) and Train Station (4). Why aren't the numbers 123 rather than 234? If I try to change them they change back. Please help.

Thank you,
Joe

Hi Joe,

Are you clicking the save icon at the top of the column after you re-order them?

Click the column title and the save icon will show. Reorder them then click the save icon.

Let us know if that's the problem or something else.

Cheers,
Ed

I clicked the column title so I get all the icons. I manually changed the order to 123 then clicked the save icon and it went back to 234.

I do all my work on a Linux box and couldn't get screenr to work. I know it is browser based and should work but, apparently, I don't have the correct java version.

I created my articles with OSContent - I'm not sure how stable that particular extension is.

I am happy to provide, privately, my password to the administrator portion of my site - it is just experimental for me and will be torn down after I finish the book. Or, is there some other way I could give you a screen shot?

Again, I clicked the column title so I get all the icons. I manually changed the order to 123 then clicked the save icon and it went back to 234.

Thank you, Joe H.

Hi Joe,

I looked at the page. I attached a screen shot. All your pages are in proper order and numbered correctly.

If you are referring to the page ID, that's a different matter. That's unique and can't be changed.

You may just not be seeing your changes because your pages are cached. Go to Site > Maintenance > Clear Cache occasionally to make sure you're looking at a fresh page.

It's either that or you solved the problem before I got to it. If so, nice work!

Cheers,
Ed

Maybe I am missing something but the screen shot shows the order in the Transport Category (bottom of screen shot) to be 234. It seems to me it should be 123.

Thank you, Joe

Hi Joe,

I was able to change the order numbers, but I had to do it one at time, and had to force it to change by trying to save to articles with the same number. Then it automatically but them in order.

This looks like a bug in Joomla. I don't think it's anything you are doing wrong. I haven't seen it happen elsewhere, but that might be because I just haven't run into it yet.

I'll look for it in the forums. If it seems to be something common we may need to report this to the bug squad. It looks like this site might have been created using jupgrade. It might have happened during upgrade if you did. I don't have this problem on other joomla installations. If you can do a clean install in another directory and it the new one works correctly, it would point to a problem with this particular installation.

PS. I took the liberty of adding Admin Tools to your site so I could make sure permissions were correct.

Ed,
Thank you for your great work.
FYI:
My server is on a dedicated cloud server. I installed LAMP first and then used the Joomla 2.54 tar.gz file to do a clean Joomla install. The install was clean, no glitches.

The dedicated cloud server allow me to have about 10 independent Joomla servers, all for a total price of about $20/month.

I now have the articles, both in article manager and menu manager, appearing in the order of Figure 4.26, page 75 of Joomla Explained.

I am having a problem with page navigation.

The navigation links Next and Prev don't work right for Joomlaville Location (page 75). The Next link takes me up to Overview and the Prev link takes me down to History. The Next and Prev links work OK for Zoo and Bus Station.

Please tell me what I should do to change the Next and Prev links for Joomlaville Location so they work in the intuitive order, that is, Next goes down and Prev goes up.

I think I am having this problem because I used the OSContent component to create the articles.

Thank you, Joe

Hi Joe,

I don't think the issue is due to using OSContent, however you could test it by creating three new articles without it.

Generally, I'd recommend that each article have it's own unique number. So three articles shouldn't all have "1" as the order. So you might order the articles from 1 to 12 all the way down. That should hopefully correct the issue for you, by eliminating any conflicts.

Kind regards,
Nick

In Article Manager the articles are numbered 123 123 123 123.

In Menu Manager #1 is for Home and the rest are 2 thru 10. I don't have menu itemsfor the Festivals category.

The url to my site is:
joomla1.josephhesse.com

Click on Joomlaville Location and then the Prev button.

Thank you, Joe

PS - I would be happy to send you, via email, the name and password for the admin part of my site.

I tried to renumber the articles in Article Manager but it won't let me.

Specifically, I click on Ordering, change one of the numbers, click on the floppy disk icon, then it all changes back.

I think I can make everything OK by deleting all my articles and starting over. I don't want to do this yet, I want to understand what is happening.

Thank you, Joe

Hi Joe,

Sorry, I misspoke! Joomla 2.5 has independent ordering for each category (which is the opposite in 1.5). So in 2.5, the order would be 1,2,3...1,2,3...1,2,3, etc. That's why it won't allow you to save different numbers.

Going back to your actual issue, it appears to be a bug. I also found a previous JoomlaCode Bug Tracker issue that documents the bug, but it was still set at "Open" status, so I've gone ahead and set its status to "Confirmed". Here's a direct link to the tracker issue:
joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/tracker...racker_item_id=25608

Hopefully we'll be able to get that fixed in the next Joomla version.

Kind regards,
Nick
