Hi,

I want to try some extensions on the local host before I use them on the live site. So I followed the tutorial on backing up the site using akeeba, and then using kick start to restore.

The process went exactly like the tutorial, and was successful. I can go to the local host and see the site but none of my links work. I cant see the other pages, therefore cant test the extensions. I went in the menus and looked at the links they all look fine, I just get the 404 error, whenever I try to access any links. Also, one of the links is an article list, that also doesn't work.

Please help.

Thanks,
Shirin

Hi Shirin,

Can you give me a link to the site in question so I can take a look at what you're getting?

Thanks
Ed

its on my laptop, i don't know how will you be able to log into it.

I thought I might be getting an error because I haven't changed htaccess.txt to .htaccess. after I did that now I cant even get the home page. error 500.

AM I not suppose to change the htaccess file in the localhost environment?

thanks,
Shirin

Hi Shirin,

After you change it to .htaccess, enable the SEF url's SEO stuff in the backend of your Joomla site. :-)

hi,
it was not even letting me log in to the admin panel. so I changed the .htaccess file back to htaccess.txt. Now I can log in, but it does not let me change the configuration. I thought if I change the URL rewriting back to no, then change the htacess.txt to .htacess, then set the url rewriting to yes then it will work. but when i try to save the changes to global configuration I get an error "unable to write to the configuration file"

why can't I change the configuration?

thanks

Hi shirin,

Here is a solution for the configuration issue:

docs.joomla.org/Cannot_save_Global_Configuration_changes

Let me know an update. :-)

Hi,
I made a copy of my site, and then copied it over the restored folder like kickstart trouble shoot says. to fix any corruption of files.

it was not working until I changed the .htaccess file to htaccess.txt. but even now none of the links work. I can only see the index page of the site. the admin side works, i can access everything, I just cant see the front end.

How do I fix this.

I have been going in circles. help will be much appreciated.

thanks

Hi Shirin,

500 errors are not website errors but server errors.
Are you using PC or MAC?
Are you using XAMPP or something similar?

Are you able to do a generic install of Joomla on the local computer that works? If you can do a new install and it works, then we can rule out the server.

Also when you do your Akeeba backup, try making a backup of just the database, or use phpMyAdmin export to have a separate data base that you can use to test the data base integrity as well.

If you can get a new Joomla install that works, you can modify the configuration.php to point to your original data base, and the site should still work. That will let you know if you have a corrupted database.

First thing to try is a joomla install to make sure your server is working correctly.

Hi,

I am using a PC windows 7, I have wamp. I did the new site insatll with the Joomla 2.5 and the test site worked just fine. I did a new backup of the live site and used akeeba kick start, it was not working. so I downloaded the original live site, and copied that over the extracted akeeba site, minus the config file. I was still having the error so I changed .htaccess file to .txt, and changed the change the friendly url to no. (I did all this before too)
Now the site seems to be working, on the local host. I have not tested every single page but most of it is working. It does not have the short urls, now has the long versions but I think that is ok since I just want to test things here. I cant go through this pain again..three days of horror.

but I still don't understand why it is having a problem with .htaccess, and why kickstart worked after like gazillion tries..

thanks

Hi Shirin,

When you say none of the links work, what kind of error is showing?

Additionally,

If you are using akeeba kickstart, here is a great guide that I have used for troubleshooting:
www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/akeeb...t-documentation.html

There is a link when you scroll below that says "Troubleshooting".

Let me know if that helps.
