TOPIC: 2 questions: Blockquote and PDF files

2 questions: Blockquote and PDF files 2 years 4 weeks ago #41655

Using Joomla 1.5. Have 2 questions:

1) I have PDFs of vehicle specs. I want to put an icon 'Vehicle Specs' next to the vehicle and hyperlink it to the vehicle specs. What is the best way to display this document and what format should it be in?

2) How do I display those slightly visible quotes around my testimonials? Not sure if they are called blockquotes or not. I tried the blockquote icon in JCE but nothing appears.

Thanks,
Maxx

Hi Maxx,

1) Is any part of this created yet? If so, can we get a link to a sample page?

2) The following is an example of block quotes:
www.w3schools.com/tags/tryit.asp?filenam...html_blockquote_test

Yes, it's best to have testimonials in block quotes then to style appropriately. To use block quotes with JCE, you must highlight the text then click the button.

Hope this helps! :) For future reference, please open up a new forum topic for each topic, otherwise it gets cluttered after several replies. Thanks!

Kind regards,
Nick

2 questions: Blockquote and PDF files 2 years 3 weeks ago #41972

This is regarding the 'vehicle specs. I have a PDF vehicle spec that I would like to show to the viewer. I will put a 'vehicle specs' icon next to a new car and hyperlink it somewhere. Want the viewer to simply select this icon and the vehicle specs are revealed. I remember that we cannot do this with a PDF file so wondering how best to accomplish this task. Looking for guidance on what to do. Thanks

Hi Maxx,

Thanks for the clarification. However, I really need to know if any part of this is created yet, and, if so, if we can get a link to a sample page.

I think I remember that in other topics you had mentioned that you're using Virtuemart for an online catalog of the vehicles. If so, are you want the PDF to show up in Virtuemart?

Kind regards,
Nick

Not sure what you mean. Nothing is created since I am trying to determine just what to create, what to do, where to start? Yes on showing up in VirtuMart. This is where the vehicles appear - I have begun this since I was under the impression we could not display a PDF file - I though about converting the PDF to an image but the quality was not very good. I just wanted to know if this can be done and where to start.

Thanks,
Maxx

Hi Maxx,

The Virtuemart catalog is created, so that's the info I was looking for :) Otherwise, I would have told you to just do it in an article, but you're actually wanting it to show up in Virtuemart.

OK, now that we've gotten that straightened out, can we get a link to a sample virtuemart page that you'd like a PDF on?

Kind regards,
Nick

Rodger, doger. on page www.missiongolfcars.com/express-lifestyl...d=179&category_id=28 I will add an icon ( View Vehicle Specs). The viewer will select this icon and a document such as a PDF spec sheet for the vehicle will magically appear on his screen to view. He exits and back to the aforementioned page noted here.

Hi Maxx,

Thanks!

In the product description, you could add the icon then link it to the PDF. Would that work?

Basically the code would be:
<a href="/images/stories/pdfName.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="/images/stories/specIcon.jpg" alt="Specifications Icon" width="152" height="114" /></a>

Nick

2 questions: Blockquote and PDF files 2 years 3 weeks ago #42311

Being ignorant is often blissful, Nick. Thanks. From what little I thought I knew, we can't put a PDF on a page????? I even tried simply copying and pasting a PDF on a blank article page and got the message PDF not supported. So confusing. I tried converting the PDF to a JPG but didn't like the quality of the resulting image. Hence, I sent y'all the note. Regarding your code above my link is /home/corpusch/public_html/images/stories/myPDFDocs/test.pdf from what I can tell. I am confused about the pdfName.jpg and the speclcon.jpg in your line of code above. So...I do need to convert the pdf to a jpg? When I load my pdf file into the media manager to my myPDFDocs folder, it appears to me to be just a jpg image of the PDF icon - is my pdf file really there? Really got to get down to basics here I am afraid.

cheers,
Maxx

Hi Maxx,

You're welcome!

Yes, being ignorant is often blissful, but a skilled man stands before kings :)

You want to add an icon (View Vehicle Specs), correct? Well that icon is technically an image in HTML. So that's represented by the following code:
<img border="0" src="/images/stories/specIcon.png" alt="Specifications Icon" width="152" height="114" /><a href="url">
You can name the icon image whatever you'd like. In the example above, it's named specIcon and it's a .png file (a type of image file).

You'd like that icon to link to a PDF so that when someone clicks the icon, the PDF shows up, correct? So we need a link. In HTML links are created like so:
<a href="images/stories/myPDFDocs/test.pdf" target="_blank"></a>
The example above links to your PDF. Whatever is between the <a> and the </a> is a link.

So the final result looks something similar to:
<a href="images/stories/myPDFDocs/test.pdf" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="/images/stories/specIcon.jpg" alt="Specifications Icon" width="152" height="114" /></a>

Hope this helps! Let me know if you need a clarification.

Kind regards,
Nick

2 questions: Blockquote and PDF files 2 years 2 weeks ago #42679

OK, I'm back attempting to do this again.

My link is as follows:
%3Ca%20href=%22images/stories/myPDFDocs/test.pdf%22%20target=%22_blank%22%3E%3Cimg%20border=%220%22%20src=%22/images/stories/specIcon.jpg%22%20alt=%22Specifications%20Icon%22%20width=%22152%22%20height=%22114%22%20/%3E%3C/a%3E

I get a 404 error when selecting the icon. I already had a vehicle spec icon in the media file and inserted it on page as follows:

missiongolfcars.com/multi-passenger.html...d=177&category_id=25

where did I go wrong? I loaded the test.pdf in my media file as well. The PDF is located at /home/mission/public_html/images/stories/myPDFDocs and is called test.pdf.

cheers,
Maxx

Hi Maxx,

Use a regular link for the href :) For example:
images/stories/myPDFDocs/test.pdf

Wow...sort of like magic. I had no idea what you meant.,..I just replaced my link (I went to the media file and copied that link) with the link above that you sent and it appears magically.

I love it.
