I'm unable to perform a security update. Nothing happens when I try to update. I get this message every time I need to make a change to the site:

There is a security update available for your version of Drupal. To ensure the security of your server, you should update immediately! See the available updates page for more information and to install your missing updates.

I click on the "available updates"
Drupal core (Security update) 7.12 7.14 (Release notes) is the recommended update.

I then click "Install new module or theme"
I choose a file from my desktop.

When I go to install the update nothing happens.

Hey Nick,

I followed the tutorial through. Once the upload was completed, I refresh the "Available updates" page and it still is marked red.

I did not get an error message. Everything seemed correct only the update didn't take. When you uncompress the file and delete the sites folder, do you have to compress the file again to upload?

thanks,

Hi stjohn,

You can't upgrade the Drupal core by using the "install a new module or theme"

You download the Drupal core, uncompress it on your local computer, then upload the uncompressed folders and files to your server. You DO NOT upload the sites folder, which is the only exception. The sites folder has all your changes and updates, so you want to keep the one you have.

That's all there is to it. You might want to run update.php after the install to make sure everything is updated and also clear your cache in drupal and your browser.

Ed,

Is there a way to upload the entire folder without uploading each individual item in the folder?

thanks,

I'm not sure what you mean. You should be able to pick what you want to upload.

Which folder are trying to upload? What FTP program are you using? That might help me understand what you're trying.

Thanks
Ed

I use Cpanel File Manager v3. I am trying to upload "drupal-7.14 2"
First I go to my file manager.
I locate the theme or my site that I want to update. mysite/newscenter
I click on the upload button in the file manager to upload a new file.
Once I'm to the upload section of the file manager I have the option to overwrite existing files and upload those files.
At this point I have the uncompressed folder titled "drupal-7.14 2" (I have already deleted the sites folder)on my desktop.

I'm ready to upload the contents of this folder.

When I go to choose this folder it won't allow me to upload the entire folder. Instead I have to go into the folder and update one-by-one the contents of that folder. ex. The file folder "Includes" and its contents, file folder "Misc" and its contents, file folder "modules" and its contents, and so on.

I must be doing something wrong. It looked easy in the tutorial?

I have the same cpanel as you do. I will try to duplicate your actions and see what I can learn.

You could also try this procedure.
1. upload the compressed file to a new folder on your server.
2. Use File Manager to uncompress it on the server.
3. Use File manager to copy the contents of the new folder to your main folder. (without the sites folder of course.)

Your server may be set up so the file manager doesn't do that kind of upload for you without confirming each file.

If you don't already have it, you might also want to download Filezilla which will allow you to directly access the server. You can use that to upload all the files at once. You can download Filezilla from filezilla-project.org/download.php - It's totally free and the program I use.

Let me know how that works out.

Where do I create the new folder in the file manager to do the alternative procedure? Just anywhere? When I copy the contents to the new folder will I have to override the existing files?

First I need to get this figured out. After this I need help with the following. I will start a new thread.

Ed, you had mentioned in an earlier conversation that "You can have as many independent drupal sites as you have space on your hard drive." So I created a new site, I've done some of the development there. You said once it is working I can move it to my main URL. Can you point me in the right direction for moving instructions?

Is this the link? www.ostraining.com/blog/drupal/move-your...e-to-a-new-location/

thanks,

To move this to another directory on the same server, you just copy the entire contents of the folder, with the sites folder, to whatever directory you want to put it in. Since it's on the same server, you don't need to change the database connection.

Just copy all the files to the desired directory. You might want to make backups of your site and data as a precaution.

Where you might have trouble with copying to a directory with an existing site is copying over the sites directory. There are parts of the sites directory that you cannot write to. So you will want to change the permissions on those folders. Here's a tutorial that shows you how to delete the sites directory, and in the process how to change the permissions that need to be changed.

Let us know how it turns out. don't forget to backup.
Cheers,
Ed

Ed,

I was able to backup my site, but migrating my site is looking very complicated. I don't know where to begin? I have file zilla working and Im trying to learn how to navigate it. Is there a video tutorial on migrating a site? I've spent a lot of time taking one step forward and two steps back just to get to where I currently am with my site. Right now, I do not feel I can comfortably migrate this site??

It looks like before I uploaded the newscenter theme to two locations in the file manager. I had help from OStraining on uploading it the second time, but I don't remember which folder is which.

newscenter folder in Location 1: Public_html
newscenter folder in Location 2: wwww

Im not sure which newscenter folder I need to be transferring and where I need to transfer it to. I just realized this.

I need to determine where the site is in my file manager that Im currently operating. I then need to determine where to move it to.

In the Tutorial I believe I am stuck on step 2: www.ostraining.com/blog/drupal/drupal-migrate/

Any more advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Did you follow the directions to the first tutorial where it shows you how to setup Backup and Migrate?

You do need to get more familiar with the file system. A lot of the problems you are having are procedural problems with copying and moving files and keeping track of the directories.

Don't feel bad. I went through this when I started too. Seems bewildering, but once you catch on to the logic, it becomes clearer. You're learning a lot. Keep at it.

Cheers,
Ed
