I purchased a theme and tried to upload it, Now I'm back to where I started. I'm probably worse off then before. First I deleted everything I was working on while I was going through beginners course. So, that drupal install is gone. I downloaded the zip file to my desktop and proceeded to follow these instructions:

Installing NewsCenter
NewsCenter is created over an installation profile, so you don't need to do much to get it working. Following steps will guide you trough the installation process.

1. Extract newscenter_v1.zip file on your web server. It includes all you need to get it working, so don't worry about any other files handle.

The location of your installation depends on the kind of server you're using. I mention some examples here you may be:

In case you're using a local XAMP on Windows, the server root folder is C:\xampp\htdocs\
In case you're using a local AppServ on Windows, the server root folder is C:\Appserv\www\
In case you're using a local MAMP on OSX, the server root folder is Aplications/MAMP/htdocs/
In case you're using a remote/local WebServer on Linux, the server root folder usually is /home/user/public_html/
Once you extract it, it will be located on a folder called "newscenter". You can change it and place your new theme name there.

2. Using a Web Browser, navigate to your folder/domain/subdomain where the extracted newscenter's folder was created.. I'll use as example the name "newscenter" due to the default folder. It would be on "http://localhost/newscenter" in case you installed it locally or "yourdomain.com/newscenter" in a remote installation.

3. Select NewsCenter as your installation profile on the "Select an installation profile" page and then click "Save and Continue".

Now I can't delete any of the files I uploaded. I even tried changing the permissions in the file manager like the link you had provided me before had shown. Nothing's working for me. This isn't a lot to go on I know, Maybe you can ask me some questions to help me better frame this dilemma.??? You can see whats happening if you visit my site

Also, I want to add that I tried uploading this in drupal in the apprearence section (like the training show) where you go to upload themes and nothing. It was non-responsive when I tried to upload the zip.??

thanks,

Hi Stjohn,

I understand your frustration. When I first learned how to install a CMS it was a huge pain. After you do it a few times, it becomes easier and simpler.

What is the method you are using to install your Drupal site? And it's on the hosting service you provided, correct?

I have a feeling you may have missed a step during installation previously and forgot to make your FTP Drupal directory writable.

You can find that information here: drupal.org/node/1011872

You can install the latest version of Drupal here: drupal.org/project/drupal

After installation, here are directions to installing a theme correctly:
  • Download a new theme package. Note that themes for different Drupal versions are not compatible, version 5.x themes do not work with Drupal 6.x and reverse.
    Read any README or INSTALL files in the package to find out if there are any special steps needed for this theme.
  • Upload the contents of the theme package to a new directory in the themes directory in your Drupal site. In Drupal 5.x & 6.x, you place your themes in /sites/all/themes/yourThemeName
  • Click administer ยป themes and enable the new theme (Drupal will auto-detect its presence).
  • Edit your user preferences and select the new theme. If you want it to be the default theme for all users, check the default box in the themes administration page.

What version is your theme?

I think I did uploaded this right this time. I only say that because what U was trying to upload is somewhat there. I'm pretty sure there's supposed to be more to it?

demos.doublemthemes.com/newscenter/documentation/#!/installing

This is the link that I have been viewing to install this theme, only the appearance section of my administration page shows a lot of stuff. When I uploaded the danland theme from the ostraining video, there was only a thumbnail of danland and enable and set as default. When I went to the appearance section after uploading the newscenter theme there was a bunch of files that read no screenshot like chaos tools and bulk export 7.x and so on. More than just the theme. I uploaded the theme which was news_center.zip to the sites/all/themes directory. I then deleted the zip file and went to the appearances section on my drupal site and there it was. I enabled and set as default. I know I did something wrong and it has something to do with everything that's listed on the appearance page, I just don't know how to fix it.??

Hi and welcome, stjohn!

Great job on getting this far! Don't worry, the first month or two is/are the hardest. It gets a lot easier afterward. In the mean time, we're here to help :)

OK, can we take a step back? What is the most pressing issue that you're currently experiencing? Could you upload a screenshot of the issue?

Kind regards,
Nick

I contacted the company I bought the theme from after I tried to install the theme the second time. They were helpful but I don't feel I understand how to do what they are suggesting very confidently.

It seems I installed NewsCenter as a standard Drupal site. This was not supposed to happen. They told me to refer to line 3 of the instructions

demos.doublemthemes.com/newscenter/documentation/#!/installing

after I have cleaned the previous install I made (the current) and do a new Drupal + database installation. Once I finish, everything will be ok.

Does that mean all I have to do is uninstall drupal? or do I have to contact my host provider again and wipe my account clean again?

Also, if you could look at the link with the instructions of how to install this and tell me how to do this as if you were explaining this to a small child I would appreciate it. I've messed up this installation twice.

Hi Sthohn,

You don't need to wipe the site clean. You can just create a new directory and do a new installation there. You can have as many independent drupal sites as you have space on your hard drive.

So create a new site, do the development there, and once it's working, you can move it to your main URL. We can help you with moving instructions.

I'll read those instructions and get back to you.

Hi Stjohn,

Unzip it on your local computer and send all the files to the server using FTP. Create a new directory for it with a different name than your current installation.

Go to yourdomain.com/yournewdirectory and start going through the installation steps.

When you get to the screen that they show you in step 3 of those directions, you should have three choices like they do in the picture. You need to check the bottom one to choose that profile.

If your screen doesn't look like that, and you can't see the choices, then there is something wrong with your installation files or the zip file you got from the company.

You can't try to install this theme on an existing drupal installation. You have to use their version.

Tray it again and see if you are getting the screen that allows you to make the choice. Let us know.

Ok. This time I got this error message. I got through the screen with the drupal installation and after I tried to enter my database information I got a message that my site already had drupal installed?

1.) I uploaded a zip file into my public/html
2.) I unzipped it into the default newscenter file.
3.) I was able to go to http://mywebaddressexample/newscenter and access the drupal configuration screen.
4.) There I ran into this. Please see the attached screenshots.

What am I doing wrong now? Do I need to create a new database? I'm not sure that I even know what I just asked?

I feel that I am close. I appreciate all the help.

Thanks,

Hi stjohn,

Looks like you're close. The second attached screenshot provides some valuable information as does the first. Looks like you're using the same database and likely the same database user as well. Could you try creating a new database, e.g. sporting_drp2 , and a new database user as well? Then edit your settings.php file and change the respective information in there.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Kind regards,
Nick

Nick,

I added a database name sporting_drpl2 like we had discussed and even gave myself a different username but when I go to www.mysite/newsletter there is no longer a prompt to setup drupal. Just a white screen. I don't understand. Do I have to delete something?

thanks,

HI Stjohn,

The settings.php file is located in sites/default/settings.php

Open it with a script editor and there will be a section there for the database connection, modify that section with the information from your new data base. Heres what your looking for.
$databases = array (
  'default' =>
  array (
    'default' =>
    array (
      'database' => 'yourdatabasename',
      'username' => 'databseusername',
      'password' => '',
      'host' => 'localhost',
      'port' => '',
      'driver' => 'mysql',
      'prefix' => 'dru1_',
    ),
  ),
);

Check that out and try it again. You're almost there. When you solve this one, you'll never have this problem again.

Cheers,
Ed

I was able to get my homepage back, but mysite.com/newscenter still has a white screen. It will not prompt to go through the installation process. Am I doing something wrong with the way I m setting up my database?

Hi stjohn,

Do you by chance have a webhost that you could upload the site to? It's hard for us to help you without being able to see the site ourselves and see what the issue may be. If that you can upload it to a live server, I can log in and take a look for you.

Nick,

I REALLY,REALLY appreciate the help. You have made my day. Yet again, I have run into another obstacle. I tried to replace the logo on the site but it would not replace the logo. I am sure I did everything right(I've already done this once before). I needed to upload updates. So, I tried to update the newscenter drupal them and I got this message. Please see attached.
