Drupal Omega Base theme tutorial 1 year 2 weeks ago #45901

Hi,
I am following your tutorial on making a theme using the Omega base theme.
After I installed the helper modules I started to experience slower response from the system or the database, I´m working localhost. Is this normal during the development, and/or will using the Omega plugin with a sub-theme slow my site down in general?

Hans

Hi Hans,

It's normal on a local installation on a pc or mac. Many people report slower response on localhost. There are things you can do to try to speed it, but they are rather complicated.

If you can get a commercial server to try it out on, you might find it faster. (Unless it's GoDaddy, which may have speed problems because of the way they do things.)

Using a sub-theme shouldn't have any affect on the speed. Mostly the speed is affected by calls to the database, or scripts that need to load, large images or files that need to be read into the page by the parser.

Cheers,
Ed

Hi and thank you Ed,

I am experiencing a slower response from the Omega base theme site then from a similar site with just the default modules. Both sites have the same content, almost nothing, running on the same computer.

But if the Omega base stuff is not slowing things down on live sites I am not going to worry about it, it´s probably a localhost issue like you said.

Thanks,

Hans

Your welcome, Hans.

If it does turn out to be a problem, we can investigate further. But, so far, in my experience, this is normal.

Let us know how it develops.

Cheers,
Ed
