Our instructor said this is possible but never got around to saying how. Would it be possible to explain how one could make a very simple photo album using views?

There are many modules but they are complex and not easy to use. I was told that the built in Views in Drupal can be used...hopefully one of the instructors will give me an idea how to do this.

Hi bezu60

Yes, this is certainly possible.

We have a Drupal 6 tutorial on creating a photo gallery with Drupal 6 and Node Gallery: www.ostraining.com/blog/drupal/node-gallery/

When it comes to Drupal 7 and Views, we'll have a tutorial up for you later today.
Ask. We'll help. It's as simple as that.

Actually, I am still using Drupal 6. But Node Gallery is a module. Someone said I could create a simple gallery just using Views. Is that not correct?

A gallery using Views? Yes.

Simply? Not so much. Node Gallery would be quicker and easier. Drupal 7 would be much easier also, but the process is fairly clunky still in Drupal 6.

If you want the Views route though, we can do that tutorial for you.

These tutorials might also be worth your time, although they are a little more advanced than the tutorial we'd write:

I tried the Node Gallery tutorial. When I went to enable the modules Imagefield was required but not mentioned in your tutorial. Also...when I enabled ImageCache I got this warning:

user warning: Table 'imagecache_preset' already exists query: CREATE TABLE imagecache_preset ( `presetid` INT unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment, `presetname` VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (presetid) ) /*!40100 DEFAULT CHARACTER SET UTF8 */ in /home/felix/public_html/new/includes/database.inc on line 515.
user warning: Table 'imagecache_action' already exists query: CREATE TABLE imagecache_action ( `actionid` INT unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment, `presetid` INT unsigned NOT NULL DEFAULT 0, `weight` INT NOT NULL DEFAULT 0, `module` VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL, `action` VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL, `data` LONGTEXT NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (actionid), INDEX presetid (presetid) ) /*!40100 DEFAULT CHARACTER SET UTF8 */ in /home/felix/public_html/new/includes/database.inc on line 515.

Please explain?

It also says in ImageAPI:

Install and enable ImageAPI module *and* one of its toolkits (GD or ImageMagick)...also not mentioned in the tutorial.

Yes, that tutorials a year old now. It could well be that the modules have moved on and added some requirements.

I'll make a note to update it.

The offer stands for a Views tutorial still. Let me know if that would be helpful.

Well I added all the modules for Node Gallery and then when I tried to enable it I got this:

What code is in the image? field is required.
user warning: Table 'node_gallery_relationships' already exists query: CREATE TABLE node_gallery_relationships ( `rid` INT NOT NULL auto_increment, `gallery_type` VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL, `image_type` VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL, `imagefield_name` VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL, `settings` TEXT DEFAULT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (rid) ) /*!40100 DEFAULT CHARACTER SET UTF8 */ in /home/felix/public_html/new/includes/database.inc on line 515.
user warning: Table 'node_gallery_images' already exists query: CREATE TABLE node_gallery_images ( `nid` INT unsigned NOT NULL DEFAULT 0, `gid` INT unsigned NOT NULL DEFAULT 0, `weight` SMALLINT NOT NULL DEFAULT 0, PRIMARY KEY (nid), INDEX gallery (gid) ) /*!40100 DEFAULT CHARACTER SET UTF8 */ in /home/felix/public_html/new/includes/database.inc on line 515.
user warning: Table 'node_gallery_galleries' already exists query: CREATE TABLE node_gallery_galleries ( `gid` INT unsigned NOT NULL DEFAULT 0, `cover_image` INT unsigned DEFAULT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (gid), UNIQUE KEY cover_image (cover_image) ) /*!40100 DEFAULT CHARACTER SET UTF8 */ in /home/felix/public_html/new/includes/database.inc on line 515.

What does all this mean????

And no Gallery content type appears. All the modules seem to be enabled. This is not working at all :(

Hi bezu60

I took at look at NodeGallery and it has indeed had a major rewrite since that tutorial was published last year.

The first thing I would do to bugshoot this is to make sure that all the required modules are up-to-date.

I presume you have CCK and others already installed. Check to make sure that they are at the latest version.

I really can't risk my other site content with all of this. That is why I was looking for something simple :( I don't want to do a lot of uploading and upgrading.

This isn't going to work.

No, reading through the Node Gallery docs the rewrite appears to have made it substantially less simple unfortunately.

As you can see from the other Drupal 6 Photo Gallery tutorials above there's nothing very simple I'm afraid. All photo galleries will take half-a-dozen modules and some configuration.

Well I feel very frustrated. I sat down to follow the tutorial you provided and ended up with a mess. It's not enough to say it's been rewritten...that should have been taken down and no one should have steered me to it.

Please let me know if an updated tutorial for any kind of photo album is made available.

Bezu60

Sorry about that. We have over a thousand tutorials on this site. There's no way we can keep them all up-to-date and taken them down when they're old. I shouldn't have pointed you to it however.

A new Drupal 6 photo gallery tutorial will be up shortly.

Hi bezu60

Using SimpleViews would have created a page for the view automatically. Can you see it in your Navigation menu?

If not, you can go to Site Building then Views and open up the view. There will be a Menu area on the page where you can create the menu link.

I see a view page and that does the trick....however...I used the resizing tool and it distorts the images. I'm not sure what to do about that.

Yes, there's a brief mention in the tutorial that the alternative is to create preset using Scale rather than Resize. That will make sure all the images maintain their dimensions.

I tried that but don't see a change. Also...I can't see the Gallery if I am not logged in and I can't find the appropriate permission to change this. It is restricting it to logged on users. Actually it seems to be asking for permission to post comments in order to view the pics. Where can I change this?

You can't see the pics without logging in...something to do with permissions for comments?

Comments separate...I disabled. But you still can't see the pic unless you are logged in. How do I fix that?

Go to Site building > Modules and look down to the CCK area. Is there check in the Content Permissions box?

If so, go to User management > Permissions > content_permissions module and you can give Anonymous users viewing access.

Great, thanks bezu60. Yes, the user interface in Views for Drupal 6 can be clunky ... changing the settings for the wrong display is perhaps the most common mistake people make as a result.

One more question! It seems as if the content type "photo gallery" is every photo I upload with that content type and that any album I create will have EVERY photo I "create".

What happens when I want to create a new album? Do I have to create a new content type photo gallery2?

Beth

Hi Beth

The next step is to create a more advanced photo gallery by figuring out a way to sort them into photo galleries.

The most common method would be to use Taxonomy to tag the photos with keywords. For example you might have terms such as Family, Nature and Landscapes.

You can then create different versions your current View. Each version would filter photos by term. For example, one version would filter only photos with the term Family, another Nature and another Landscape.
Ask. We'll help. It's as simple as that.
