I am not sure what sort of set up or access you have to the server but yes you can transfer a Drupal site from one server to another. Do you have FTP access and Cpanel? If you do, go to download.com and search for Filezilla - a FTP software program that works very well. Using this software you can download all of your files. Using the Cpanel, if you have access, you can download your database using 2 methods ... using backup or going through phpMyAdmin.

Hope this helps. If you are still uncertain, your host provider should be able to provide you with your files. But once you ask for them, they will clue into the fact that you are moving your files and may be less than helpful.

Cheers,

Dwayne

Hi acha. Before backing up your site you should make a copy of your site in a sub directory and test your backup.

Restoring a site always has a chance to not go smoothly.

Good morning Acha,

Can you please provide answers to the following questions:

1) Do you have access to Cpanel?
2) Do you have FTP Access?
3) Do you have phpMyAdmin Access?
4) Are you running local host?

As Tessa said above, before backing up your site you should make a copy of your site in a sub directory (on your server - call it backup) and test your backup. I would duplicate and rename the dbase and then change the settings.php file to ensure that all is running smoothly.

Do this using FTP and cPanel. I would also recommend downloading all of your files and your database(s) to your local hard drive.

Let me know the answers to my questions above and then, perhaps, I can offer some additional advise.

Before cancelling your account with your current provider, I would set up an account with another hosting company and make certain that they can support the installation, configuration and any trouble shooting issues related to the Drupal CMS. If they are PCI DSS compliant that is also a bonus but not a necessity. Don't forget to ask what there rates are for support.

Hope this helps and Happy Easter :-) !

Do you mean the name of the folder or the name of the backup file?

You can name the folder anything you like. You'll access it by typing into your browser address bar localhost/mymovedsite It can be named anything you want and it doesn't need to be a url with a .com or other extension.

Is that what you were asking?

Cheers,
Ed

ok thanks. the name of the folder is drupal. then i used the back up module to resotre the backup date base which i backed up using the same backup module but then the site does not display well but some features of the site are visible. just the links and some writings.when i click on the links they dont show. i also copied all the files to the folder. so i am confused at this point. dont know if there is more settings i have to do.

Hi Acha,

Could you provide a link to your site? If images aren't displaying, it could probably be fixed by fixing the image paths.

HI Acha,

You shouldn't have to change any php settings, but if you are getting warnings or any fatal error messages, copy and paste them into your reply so we can see what might be happening.

If it's not displaying correctly you may have a problem with the configuration. Open the file /sites/default/settings.php

Check these lines to make sure your data base connection is set correctly for your local server. Below are my generic settings. Make sure yours are correct for your setup.
$databases = array (
  'default' =>
  array (
    'default' =>
    array (
      'database' => 'drupal',
      'username' => 'root',
      'password' => '',
      'host' => 'localhost',
      'port' => '',
      'driver' => 'mysql',
      'prefix' => 'dru1_',
    ),
  ),
);

First establish that the data base connection is correct, then let us know and we'll go to the next step.

Hi Acha,

You need a text editor to open it. If you're using Windows, notepad-plus-plus.org is a really good free text editor that you could use. If you're using a MAC OS, Text Wrangler is a good free one to use:
www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/

Let us know if you get stuck and we'll do our best to help.

Kind regards,
Nick
