Hi
I just thought that this might interest folks.
I was asked to build a web site for a friend of a friend with almost zero computer skills. I have always avoided using large images so this is the interesting part.
The images used arrived as 8mb files, I reduced the background images to 1600px by 1200px with a file size of around 200kb. Broadband has improved so much that they work. OK there is a time lag and the site would be better if it loaded faster. The background images resize with the screen and have been tested on a 30inch screen. In fact the larger the screen the better the site works - there is a button to clear the text if using a small screen.

This is still work in progress. Just an indication of how things have changes in a short period of time.
Regards
Mark

Hi Mark,

That's a gorgeous website and an even more gorgeous location! After looking through the site, I definitely want to book a night there with my family. How I wish there was a place like that around here :)

Kind regards,
Nick

I've been using www.webresizer.com to resize and optimize my images. It's proven to be very effective and a major time saver. I wonder what the result will be if you tried obtimizing your images with it.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi
Thanks that is a fantastic tool that I did not know about. If my client (that sounds as though I charged him a fee!!) had know about it I could have instructed him on how to send the images by e mail. I have bookmarked the page. We could do with a little section on this web site to deposit these gems.
Regards
Mark

I started working on a "Resources" page a while ago, but I ran out of time. Once things slow down a bit more, I can jump on it again.

What I would really love is to have a student-led resources page where everyone can chip-in and contribute to help each other out, but I'm not sure if there's a Joomla extension that would work well for it. Any ideas?

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Mark,

I really like that website. It's the beautiful background images that really make it extravagant. :)

Nick - Thanks for that image resize link. It is now on my favorites bar!
Warm Regards,

Tessa Mero

Thanks for the webresizer link Nick, and nice site Mark, yes the images really make the site impressive. 200K for images that big is pretty good I think.
Does the webresizer tool give the ability to choose the quality of optimization like photoshop does?

Yes it does. I check it at 50% and the image was still quite good.

I do not know of an extension it might be simpler to just have a topic for useful addons then when it gets to a dozen or so covert them to a page. Some might be added to the newsletter.

No worries at all Scott. I tell you what ... could make this into new post?

You can copy-and-paste it right into here: www.ostraining.com/support-forum/cooler/

There's a lot of good ideas there and there's a lot we can act on.
Ask. We'll help. It's as simple as that.

Hi Steve,
I mentioned it because Nick was talking about a 'resources' tab he was working on that he hadn't finished earlier in this thread.
I moved my post, they are just ideas, i didn't really want to make a big deal of it.
