Can I Use Plugins on WordPress.com?

Hi Steve,
In class on Tuesday we were discussing the auto image resizer plug in to handle pictures and also the nextgen gallery.

I was surprised to find out just now that no plugins are available to me as I use wordpress.com. Is that correct?
