Custom Joomla 404 Page not working

I searched the forum for "custom 404" and found nothing. Maybe I'm missing something.

I would like a custom 404 page on my site, so I got instructions from the helpdesk of my host, Bluehost.com: You can use custom error pages for any error as long as you know its number (like 404 for page not found) by adding the following to your .htaccess file: ErrorDocument errornumber /file.html. so I created an article and linked to it from a hidden menu.

But it doesn't work. The code I put in the .htaccess file is : ErrorDocument 404 /missing-page.html.

I removed the code. Do you know where in a .htaccess file this code goes or if it works at all with joomla sites?
