No Link symbol Hi

I am trying to add a pdf document as an article using a link to point to the document. The only problem is that I cannot find the link symbol (chain) in the editor. When I run the mouse over where it should be i get the word 'Unlink' displayed.

Any ideas on how to recover the Link symbol,
