I am not sure where Docman uploads images when using it for that purpose, however I assume that your issue is that Docman is putting the image in a dir that is not available to the meida manger (/images/stories)

Is there any reason why you don't use JCE's image uploader?

If you need to use Docman than I would check to see if you can set a default directory and make sure you set it to upload to a directory inside your /stories folder.
