My Test site was fine, now getting 404. What now?

Hello,
My test site was working fine yesterday. Now when i try to connect, I am getting 404 error.
What can I do to figure out what's wrong and fix it. ie. what are some of the debugging steps that can be used to figure out whats wrong?
