Using htaccess to redirect folder outside Joomla

Hi. We have installed a WordPress blog outside our Joomla installation, and we want to redirect a few alternative spellings to it. We are using SH404sef for URL handling. While I was out, my replacement tried just adding the redirect to the htaccess file and this took the site down. How can I accomplish this?
