Should I use switch the "Use apache mode rewrite" to yes?

I've heard it helps quite a bit for the SEO purposes. If so, is there a possibility that my htaccess is already changed?

I looked for it in my ftp files and it is already .htaccess. I am a little leary of clicking that button with a yield sign next to it.
