Can't view pages of backup copy on local pc

So we do have a backup copy of our site, it is on an external hard drive that was created maybe a month or two ago. We have a weekly newsletter and a some events and other artciles that have been added since the back-up. Our site was hacked and the hacker went in and just changed the first three articles on our front page and replaced the text with their slogan.

I checked all the other articles, nothing else is wrong with it, so i would like to just replace the text in those three articles with what was there previously.

I could not see the site on my computer. I went to the index.php page and it just says do you want to open or save this file: from: C: \Inetpub\wwwroot - weinstalled php on the hard drive, so i dont understand why i cant just open the file in IEand browse the local site.
