Making a copy of my Joomla site?

I Have learned so much from your class and online Joomla training class. I am truly a begininer.

My site was designed by a web designer. I need to up date a few things. I am trying to see how he may have set things up.

How can I make a copy of my site for practice. My greatest fear is that I will delete something that I will not be able to retrieve.
