Joomla Questions

Am I Over-Thinking Joomla? Side-menus and Kunena

For the last several years I've staunchly refused to install Joomla on our site host, and of course - I've not been all that thrilled with the results of a static HTML page either, but for what we needed at the time (just a presence) it was enough.

Actually, that's not true - I did install it, didn't understand why it was described as simple/easy & I didn't have a clue.

I'm not a stupid person but I just could not wrap my head around Joomla.

Now, it seems that CMS is the way to go and I'm in the middle of doing my first Joomla site, and all in all - happy with it but I guess I'm still not grasping the hierarchy of things and such..but that's not my question at the moment....

My question/dilemma at this point is - have a basic site up (front page) and figured out (sort of) the structure - enough to get started, when I get stuck on something - I just Google, but really, that's very time consuming and you don't always find the answers you see....therefore I'm here. I started this 3 days ago & I'm learning as I go.

Going to need a forum - and I've installed Kunena based on votes & reviews. I can figure out how to work the settings on the forum itself - the problem I'm having it - the forum is squished into the centre column and really - it looks like crap.

I need to know if it's possible to get rid of the side menus or move them (don't need them all on the forum page) and have the Kunena forum width be at least as wide as the header - or even a separate page and I'll make a new header.

I actually installed, and uninstalled this 2 or 3 times over the last few days & was going to give up & just install either SMF or phpbb on a subdomain - but that has issued with customizing also (though I'm closer there) and still might go that route.

Thanks in advance
