The Ultimate Mobile Joomla Guide

October 25, 2010 | Written by Steve Burge

One of the most common questions we get from our Joomla training students now is: "how do I make my Joomla site ready for mobile phones?"

There are two different ways to do this and the choice depends largely on whether you have a template or not.

  1. Template Frameworks. If you're looking for a template, choose one of the designers whose templates automatically adjust for mobile browsers. Click to visit this section.
  2. Template plus plugin: If you already have a template, there are systems that will provide both the mobile template and a plugin to detect when someone is visiting from a mobile phone. Click to visit this section.

Here is a guide to the different ways to make your site mobile and at the end we'll show you how to manage and update your site from your phone.

Thanks Steven for putting them all together.
It ll be more awesome if you can make a list of pros & cons of each system so we can have a chance to improve them

Lovin' the Mobile Joomla component. Have downloaded it before but was a little scared by the number of configurations. Good video which has pursuaded me to revisit it. Reckon when it gets to version 1 it will become a paid extension so best hurry...

Thanks Steve, this is a great list. We just announced "Weever: Your Joomla! Site. Mobile. In Minutes." today. (www.weever.ca). Please add it on if you don't mind - should be a really unique and useful service for a lot of people. (it's free, too.)

Hi Steve,

I know that I'm a bit late for this article, but it's worth noting that the Construct template framework from joomlaengineering.com/ has integrated mobile support as well. It's a bit different in that it is a framework intended to be built upon, not something that comes pre-designed. It may be of use for the designers in the crowd.

Best,

Matt
