Update your Joomla 1.5 Version Using Admin Tools

So you are faced with having to upgrade your Joomla Core version. Where do you begin? You could do it manually, however, if you are new to Joomla, that can get a bit complicated. Thankfully, there is a great extension released by Akeeba, Admin Tools, which does the hard parts for you! Best of all, it is quick, easy, and safe!

Things to note first:

  • If you have made any changes to the core Joomla files, you will need to upgrade manually.
  • Backup first! (use steps 1 to 5 here)

Find Your Joomla Version

tutuploadstutuploadstutuploadsmedia_1291775317754.png

You can almost always find your Joomla version in the top right of your administrator backend. If it's not there you can go to Help -> System Info (see next image)

tutuploadstutuploadstutuploadsmedia_1291775628727.png
tutuploadstutuploadstutuploadstutuploadstutuploadstutuploadsmedia_1288738580353.png

Download now

Install

tutuploadstutuploadstutuploadstutuploadstutuploadstutuploadsmedia_1288739131664.png

In your site's administrator area, go to Extensions >> Install/Uninstall, click Browse to find the file and click Upload File & Install to complete the upload.

Upgrading Your Joomla Version

tutuploadstutuploadstutuploadstutuploadstutuploadstutuploadsmedia_1288739303330.png

In your site's administrator area, go to Components >> Admin Tools

tutuploadstutuploadstutuploadsmedia_1291775873486.png

Near the top right will be displayed your Joomla version and the latest Joomla version available.

tutuploadstutuploadstutuploadsmedia_1291775842751.png

Click on "Joomla! Core UPDATE FOUND" near the top left to get started.

tutuploadstutuploadstutuploadsmedia_1291776210351.png

You have two options for getting the latest version. (1) Upgrade (2) Reinstall.

In most cases it is best, and the recommended path, just to upgrade, as that will only install the necessary files to get to the most up-todate version from your current version. However, if your site has issues with corrupt files, then you would want to reinstall 1.5.22 which will replace all the core files, thus correcting any corrupted files.

In this example, we will upgrade to 1.5.22 which is, at the date of this tutorial, the most recent version.

tutuploadstutuploadstutuploadsmedia_1291777015663.png

Now you are given two options for extracting the files: (A) Directly (B) Using FTP

The simplest method is just to use the default "Write directly to files", however, with many shared hosts that is not possible, and so an FTP method is given. If you go with "Write directly to files", there is no need to change any of the FTP conguration; if, however, you use FTP, you will have to enter the correct credentials.

Once you've decided which method, simply click Update Joomla.

tutuploadstutuploadstutuploadsmedia_1291777956780.png

That is it! You have just updated your Joomla version, saved yourself a significant amount of time, and secured your site from known vulnerabilities! Mission accomplished by the powerful Admin Tool by Akeeba!

Hi Nick,

sorry to butt in, but I have the same problem Melisa has. I'm running on Joomla 1.6.4 and the detection function is working neither with the local installation nor with the uploaded one.

All the best,
Scolaro

What could be the problem here?

Thank you

Hi Joycey,

Click on the Upgrade Package link which will download the Upgrade Package, then put it in your site's tmp directly. Run the process again and it should work for you.

I have version 1.5.22 and want to upgrade to 1.5.24 but that option isn't available in Admin Tools. There is only a Reinstall button. Tried downloading and installing a patch from 1.5.22-1.5.23 from Joomlacode.org but it failed because it was missing the xml file. Any ideas?

Cheers,
Peter

So to answer myself: I first used upgrade 1.5.22->1.5.23 and then after that I used 1.523->1.5.24 and it was done.

Hi Peter,

Sorry we didn't have a chance to answer. If you ever need quick help, we have a support forum available to students to get help within 1 business day. It's part of our online package: www.ostraining.com/online

I'm glad you got your issue sorted! For future reference, you could have simply re-installed as well and that would have worked and there wouldn't have been any issues.

Hope you have a good day!

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Derek,

If you've followed the preceding directions, go ahead and reinstall. It will only reinstall your core files and won't touch 3rd party extensions.

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi Nods,

Use Admin Tools to fix your folder and file permissions. Here's a tutorial for it:

That should hopefully get rid of your error.

I tried to use Admin tools to upgrade a JA template which is on my localhost from 1.7.0 to 1.7.3 but got this error message "500 - An error has occurred.
JHtmlBatch: :language not supported".
I searched the forums, and found these linsk with the same issues, but i can't see how to work out any solution.

forum.joomla.org/.../
forum.joomla.org/.../

I've tried my best to work out the problem myself over the last 20 hours, but just keep going round in circles. I'm sure there is a quick fix, but i just can't work it out yet. Any ideas?
Big thanks

#32 Nick 2012-01-16 02:45

Hi Nods,

Admin tools doesn't upgrade any templates. It just updates the Joomla core. During which step did you get the error message?

Make a backup, then use the following tutorial to fix the permissions:
ostraining.com/.../...

then reinstall (not just upgrade) using Admin Tools.

Kind regards,
Nick
