How to Update Joomla 1.7 to 2.5

February 19, 2012 | Written by Steve Burge

Joomla 2.5Updating has become an easy process since the release of Joomla 1.6. The developers have built in a handy updater that is extremely easy to use. This new utility should make upgrading to all new Joomla versions a quick and painless process.

CAUTION: Don't do an update unless you have a backup. It's better to make a copy of the site and do the updates there, then copy it back to your main directory when you're sure everything works.

Step 1: Go to the Extension Manager

Click Update.

Step 3: Make the Update

Step 4: Finished!

You've done it. You're now on Joomla 2.5

In the future you can skip Step 2, because Joomla will automatically find and show updates for you. Whenever you login you'll now see a icon on the dashboard:

I tried this and got a message that "the PHP allow_url_fopen setting is disabled". So I could not update.

How do I change this? (I am not an expert.)

You must ask to your server provider to change it. They will do it for you.

But not always the installartion procees will be succesfull. I'm restoring right now my website due to a fatal error caused while upgradind joomla 1.7 to 2.5

I tried this tutorial in 6 different Joomla Sites.
5 times it doesn´t work. Seem´s it depend´s also what kind of plugins/components are installed and also the default admin-language is important.
