How to Prevent Fake Joomla Registration Spam Using Captcha |
| December 15, 2010 |
Lately I have been getting a ton of fake registrations on my Joomla site and it is time to put an end to it using captcha. Although captcha adds an extra step for genuine users registering, it saves me from spending 20-30 minutes a day deleting spam accounts. For genuine users, it only takes about 5 seconds longer to complete the captcha and they only have to do it one time, so the benefit is far worth it! Now I can devote 20-30 minutes extra to customer support or adding new features to the site, rather than to deleting needless accounts. This tutorial will walk you through step-by-step how to protect your Joomla site registration from spammers by using EasyCalcCheck PLUS' captcha. (http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-a-security/site-security/captcha/11964 ) Install![]() Access your administrative backend, then go to Extensions >> Install/Uninstall.
![]() Upload the EacyCalcCheck Plus plugin, then click on Upload File & Install.
![]() Successfully installed!
Configure and Enable![]() Go to Extensions >> Plugin Manager.
![]() Find System - EasyCalcCheck PLUS and click on it. ![]() Set Enabled to Yes ![]() The default Plugin Parameters work well and so I have just left them as they are. You can configure appropriately. Everything is relatively self-explanatory, however, if you need any more information you can scroll your mouse over the parameter title and a yellowish tooltip will display with some more information. E.x. user registration. Additionally, if you scroll down, you can enable EasyCalcCheck Plus on 3rd party extensions. Supported 3rd party extensions: ALFContact, AlphaRegistration, CBE, Community Builder, DFContact, Flexi Contact, JomSocial, Phoca Guestbook, QContacts and Virtuemart.
![]() Save when finished.
Check Your Registration Form![]() Beautiful! You have just safe-guarded your site from spammers! |
