How to Add Video or Audio to a Joomla Article

January 10, 2010 | Written by Rod Martin

This week we'll walk you through how to embed video and audio into an article.

We're going to use a plugin called AllVideos

Here's how you do it:

  1. Download the AllVideos plugin from JoomlaWorks.
  2. In the administration area of your Joomla site, go to Extensions >> Install / Uninstall and upload the file to install.
  3. In the administration area of your Joomla site, go to Extensions >> Plugin Manager and find and enable the plugin 'AllVideos (by JoomlaWorks)'.
  4. Insert video or audio into an article using 'tags' as described in the Available Tags page provided by JoomlaWorks. For example, if you wish to include a YouTube video into an article, you will surround the 'video id' in the tags as such {youtube}video id here{/youtube} (the 'video id' of a YouTube video comes right after the ?v= in the URL for the video)

Using this great plugin you can embed videos from many sources that host videos as well as your own hosted videos and audio files.

I did this and got a message that my audio file was too large. I need to be able to play a long message of about 45-60 minutes for my client, how can I do this?

Hi Vicki.

Many servers have a maximum upload of 2 MB.

You may need to ask your hosting company to raise this limit.

Hi Peter,

AllVideos is only available for Joomla 1.5. You can try a 1.6/1.7 native video player instead:

Also, I'd highly recommend that you upgrade your Joomla version to 1.7 (and update all extensions before that), ASAP. Here's an easy tutorial on how to upgrade:

Kind regards,

Hey Nick,
Is it any special, particular reason you strongly recommend to change Joomla into 1.7 version ?????
I ask because I install Akebabackup today to my v.1.6, made a backup and got some errors displayed on the top of back and front site and I have no idea how to repair.
May be v.1.7 is more stable ??

Hi Peter,

Yes, 1.7 is more stable, has a lot of bug fixes, has a security fix (although you can go to 1.6.6 for the security fix as well), and is a direct upgrade (so your extensions should work as they are).

Before upgrading, please make a backup with Akeeba Backup (as a just in case).

Akeeba's Admin Tools is a very good way to upgrade, here's the tutorial:
http://www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/how-to-upgrade-update-your-joomla-version-using-admin-tools-extension/

It should only take a few minutes to upgrade :)

Kind regards,
Nick

I upgraded 1.6.3->1.6.5 and eveything was ok. Then I wanted to upgrade to 1.7. What I received is follow:

Strict Standards: Accessing static property JCache::$_handl er as non static in C:\xampp\htdocs \libraries\joom la\cache\cache.php on line 394

And 15 lines of the same (as above). What was wrong ?? And I would not like to loose my site !!

Hi Peter,

Checkout the following discussion that tells how to edit the php.ini file to get rid of that error:
