How to Add a New Joomla WYSIWYG Editor

January 10, 2010 | Written by Rod Martin

It is no secret that the editor you first see when using Joomla isn't very powerful. It looks like this:

How to Add a New Joomla WYSIWYG Editor

In this tutorial we'll show you how to install an editor with improved features. It's called JCE (Joomla Content Editor). You can see there's at least 25% more options, and when you use them, you'll see they're much better:

How to Add a New Joomla WYSIWYG Editor

  • Step 1: Go to JoomlaContentEditor.net. You won't need a subscription for anything we're recommending.
  • Step 2: Go to Downloads >> Editor >> Joomla! 1.5x
  • Step 3: Find the file that has the label "Single installation package for Joomla! 1.5.x". At the time of writing this is "com_jce_157_156_package.zip"
  • Step 4: Download this file to your desktop.
  • Step 5: In the administration area of your Joomla site, go to Extensions >> Install / Uninstall and upload the file.
  • Step 6: Go to Site >> Global Configuration and choose JCE in the field "Default WYSIWYG Editor".
  • Step 7: Now when you go to an article, you'll see the new, improved editor.

What Are the Big Improvements I'll See?

  • Improved image control. Click the picture of a tree (third from right on bottom row)
  • Easier linking. Select some text and click the chain link (fifth from right on second row)
  • Pasting from Word. Clean up that ugly text using the W button (middle of second row)

Hi Brian,

JCE isn't available for Joomla 1.6 yet. Try this in Joomla 1.6 .... Extensions >> Plug-in Manager >> TinyMCE >> Functionality set to Extended. Now your TinyMCE is a lot more powerful!

If you have any more question, please feel free to ask in the forum :-)

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi, I installed and set it to JCE editor in the Global Config. However, when I try to do a edit of article. The editor appears impressively. But I can't key in anything in the text box. Can only see it when I go to show/hide.

Hi Rex,

Could you try uninstalling it and then reinstalling it? Also, make sure you have the right JCE for your specific Joomla version.

If you still can't get it, open up a discussion in the support forum so that we can help you out.

Kind regards,
Nick

Thanks so much! This really helped. I would like to know how you can create columns, was hoping the tables would help create this, but it shows the border lines, even with a 0 value on the borders :(

Maybe a dummy question, Is this a desktop editor so that I could work on a "quickstart template" or something I should install on the server before I could use it?

I am still newbie in this Joomla thing.

Hi and welcome, Hossam!

It's only an editor for your Joomla admin so it's not a desk top editor. You should consider taking our online classes (www.ostraining.com/online) in order to accelerate your learning and you'll also get our professional support :)

Kind regards,
Nick
